Within Hammurabi Organization’s Project to Promote Human Rights Culture: Discussion Workshop on Rights of People with Disabilities and Protection of Minority Rights at University of Basra’s College of Law
On Monday, December 2, 2024, the Hammurabi Organization for Human Rights held an awareness-raising discussion workshop, in cooperation with the University of Basra’s College of Law and in coordination with the Scientific Society for Sustainable Educational Studies. This included two axes: the first related to women’s rights and combating all forms of violence against them, while the second concerned the rights of persons with disabilities. It was held at the Imam al-Baqir Hall inside the university campus.
Dr. Hussein Abdul-Qadir, a lecturer at the College of Law, presented a lecture on the rights of people with disabilities. In it, he discussed the Iraqi national legislations and contents related to the rights of people with disabilities, along with the privileges provided by Iraqi Law No. 11 of 2024, amending Law No. 38 of 2013. He also pointed out the gaps and challenges facing people with disabilities and special needs, as well as introducing the active bodies and institutions meant to protect the rights of this important segment of Iraqi society. He further focused on the basic pillars included in the 2006 International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in terms of means of care, the importance of rehabilitation, integration and prevention of discrimination.
In the workshop’s second axis, Dr. Zainab Yassin, a lecturer at the College of Administration and Economics, gave a lecture on women’s rights, as well as ways to combat violence and attacks against them. She explained women’s struggle for their rights, along with the national and international laws and legislations concerned with protecting women from violence. She also touched on the main actors at the national level to protect women, and ways to prevent violence. She further highlighted the challenges facing women in their struggle to enhance their effective presence in society, presenting recommendations that would enhance their status and protect their dignity, as well as their pioneering role in society.
The workshop was moderated and facilitated by Dr. Abdul-Aziz Rahim, President of the Scientific Society for Sustainable Educational Studies. It was characterized by an interactive discussion between lecturers and students. The methodology additionally included an interactive discussion and interventions by some male and female students. The lecturers also used electronic presentations (PowerPoint).
It is worth noting that the event was held with the John Paul II Foundation and Italian Development Agency’s support and partnership.
