On Saturday, February 10, 2024, a new version of the workshop on protecting the rights of persons with disabilities was launched within the project of Inclusivity of the Right, which is being implemented by Hammurabi Human Rights Organization under the leadership of John Paul II Foundation (FGPII) and with the funding of the Italian Agency for Cooperation and Development.

The workshop was held at the headquarters of the Al-Mahaba Fraternity of Humanity in Baghdad with the presence of 24 families of People with Disabilities. The workshop was opened by Mr. William Warda, the project manager, with a welcoming speech, emphasizing the importance of deepening deliberations on the rights of people with disabilities, disseminating and working on a database of the required directions with a view to obtaining them in the light of the applicable laws and regulations.

 

The agenda of the workshop included the participation of a team from the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs consisting of Mr. Omar Farouk Al-Hafith from the Department of Organizations in the Office of the Minister of Labour and Social Affairs and Dr. Yassin Kathem Khalaf Al-Sudani, Director of Planning Department at the Authority for the Care of People with Disabilities, where talking about Law No. 38 of 2013 regarding The rights of people with disabilities, focusing primarily on Article 15 of this law, which includes a list of services that the Iraqi government should undertake to care for the rights of people with disabilities.

They also answered number of questions and queries posed by the participants, while a video was played recording of the mechanisms for implementing this law.

In another paragraph of the  agenda, Mrs. Pascale Warda, Chairwoman of Hammurabi Human Rights  Organization, addressed the merits of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, stressing the principled and procedural link between the Declaration and the International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilitiesfor the year 2006. The application of this Convention is authorized only from the basis of application of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and not in isolation from it.

In addition, the project manager Mr. William described points on a board in the context of what had been put forward. This description had a positive impact on the enlightenment made available to participants in the workshop. He referred to the foundations of Act No. 38 on the concepts of care, rehabilitation, integration and non-discrimination, which included the International Convention of 2006.

It is to be mentioned that 24 male and female  participated in the workshop.
